Singapore Newborn Sleep Consulting

Working With Newborns (0 – 12 weeks)

Congratulations!

We hope that you are transitioning seamlessly into life with a newborn.

Life right now may seem a little overwhelming, it’s a lot to take in, but we are here for you.

You are probably a little terrified and wondering if you are feeding them enough and at the right time, how many hours each day they should be sleeping and pondering if their days and nights will ever align. But don’t worry if you are feeling scared, unsure, overwhelmed, and exhausted; our Petite Dreamers team can help you with some of the overwhelming emotions you naturally feel.

The first few weeks of your baby’s life are full of excitement, all-consuming love and angst. We are here to help you through your first few days, weeks and months to find that inner confidence in parenting. Whether it’s your first or fourth child, it doesn’t matter; each baby is different. Together we will build you a solid sleep foundation that will carry you into toddlerhood and their various stages of growth. Together, we will ensure that your baby sleeps and dreams with ease.

It’s important to remember that healthy and balanced sleep habits start at birth. The hard work that you put in now will help your sleep training plan in the future. Over the last decade, we have developed four vital pillars that you can always refer to; respect, educate, nurture, and transform. This approach will allow you to establish the proper equilibrium for lifelong and recuperative sleep.

We understand that every baby is different, so we have carefully curated a selection of foundational sleep programmes that you can build upon to suit your little one and family.

Each programme is entirely scalable and flexible no matter where you are with your sleep training.

FAQ’s

NEWBORNS (0 – 3 months)

Answers to your most frequently asked questions about newborn sleep coaching and how we can help you set up a solid sleep foundation for a thriving little sleep star!

What is the best age to sleep train my baby?

Creating good sleep associations can happen from newborn as your baby will always be ready to get more sleep, especially if they haven’t been sleeping well. However, the best time to start on the road to better sleep, is when you, as the parents, instinctively know that your baby isn’t sleeping as well. If lack of good sleep is impacting their day as well as the quality of your own sleep, then you are ready to make positive changes to help your little one sleep better. Parents being committed to the process is the no. 1 ingredient to making successful sleep possible.

Can I co-sleep and sleep train my baby?

Co-sleeping and room sharing often get confused with one another. So for clarity, when we talk about co-sleeping, we are referring to the practice of sharing a bed with your baby.

In line with the American Academy of Paediatrics guidelines on safe sleep practices (AAP Safe Sleep Link), we don’t work with families who choose to bed-share. In order to help your baby achieve an effective independent sleep skill, they will need an independent, age appropriate and safe sleep space.

Why are my baby’s nap times so short?

For newborns, there are varying factors such as your baby needing help to fall asleep, hunger, under-tiredness, over-tiredness (from overstimulation), too much or too little awake time, the environment in which they sleep, parents expectations or neurological issues (a 30-minute nap is considered normal at the newborn stage).

Can I share my bedroom with my baby?

Absolutely! It is recommended that babies share their room with a parent for at least the first 6 months of their life to help reduce the risk of SIDS.

Is it true that formula-fed babies sleep better than breastfed babies?

No, this is not true. A well-fed baby, whether formula or breastfed, can learn the skill of self-settling / independent sleep, which in turn helps them sleep longer and soundly through the night.

To add further, we don’t focus on how you feed your baby, only that your baby is getting enough food to help them grow and thrive!

Do you teach 'Cry-It-Out'?

No we do not. Let us explain why. The ‘Cry It Out Method’, otherwise known as ‘Extinction’, is the practice of putting your baby in their cot at bedtime awake and then leaving them to cry themselves to sleep without going back in to check on them or offering them any support.

Instead, we use a range of behaviour based, proven sleep training methods which have been tried and tested not just by our clients, but by us with our own children.

Will there be crying involved?

This is by far the most common question we are asked by parents and definitely something that needs to be addressed and explained before you undertake any sleep training program.

Yes, as with any baby, there will be crying involved. Sadly we don’t have a magic wand or fairy dust but we do have a proven step formula that, if implemented consistently, does result in it feeling magical!

When we start to make big changes to your baby’s sleep habits and the structure of their day, it is understandable and completely normal that they are going to be confused. Unable to articulate their confusion into words (as they don’t have any yet), crying is how they get their point across. “Mummy, last night you rocked me to sleep and I slept in your arms, tonight you’ve just put me here in the cot. What’s going on!”.

Please know we will never ask you to leave your baby to cry on their own. We want you to be there to offer support and reassurance to your baby.

The good news is that the amount of crying significantly reduces night-on-night, nap-by-nap, as you follow the step-by-step written sleep plan that we will walk you through as part of the program.

We work and our baby is at daycare or looked after by our helper/nanny. Can the plan still work?

Absolutely, the ‘not so secret’ ingredient in helping your little one develop a strong sleep skill and becoming a thriving little sleep star is consistency. This means that it is important that all caregivers who look after your little one, whether it be mummy, daddy, nana, pop, nanny/helper, are able to follow the same consistent approach to preparing and getting your little one down in the cot for their sleep.
